What a page loads while you read it

This page belongs to Solva. It is not a copy of anyone's website and it sells nothing. It was built to be blocked, so the effect of blocking can be shown instead of described.

The boxes first. If you can still see the advertising slots above and below, nothing is filtering this page. If they are gone, that is Solva — or whatever blocker you already run — and no line of CSS here did it.

Now the requests. This page can contact about three dozen real advertising and tracking servers, and their scripts then fetch more. It does not do that on its own: you are reading a page about an ad blocker, and loading trackers at you unannounced would be the joke telling itself.

Requests are the honest number

An ad that is blocked is not an ad that loaded and was then painted over. The request is never made, so the page never records it. That is why the app counts requests instead of guessing from whether something looks broken: a request that fails still leaves a trace, and a request that was blocked leaves none.

The counter in the app reads the page's own Resource Timing list — the browser's record of what it fetched, not something this page reports about itself. It cannot be talked into a nicer number.

Two different jobs

Some rules stop a request. Others hide an element that is already in the markup: a slot left behind, a subscription wall, a cookie bar. Both are running here, which is why the page gets quieter and also shorter.
